Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is used to detect surface and subsurface cracks in ferroelectric materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloys.

MPI is also used on cut and beveled pipe ends before welding to make sure there are no parent material flaws. MPI is also used by AL-ASAS Inspection to detect surface cracks after grinding or machining operations
